OLAMIOSA UK charity giving back to our Alma Mater
Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Maryway, Odo-Ona, Ibadan was established in 1957 by the Catholic Mission of Nigeria, Ibadan Diocese with management domiciled with the Sisters of the Our Lady of Apostles. Late Bishop Richard Finn was the diocesan Bishop of Ibadan at the time the school was established and he was succeeded by the Most Rev. Dr. Felix Alaba Ade Job, Rtd. Archbishop Emeritus of Ibadan Archdiocese.
At inception, the school was named Our Lady of Apostles School of Commerce, Maryway, Odo Ona, Ibadan with the vision to expand educational opportunities for young girls residing in Ibadan and environs, particularly in the south and mid-western regions of Nigeria.
The Catholic Mission owned and managed the school from inception to about the mid 1970s when the Oyo State government took over the ownership and control of some 31 secondary schools owned by foreign missions and agencies, O.L.A. Secondary School, Maryway, Ibadan inclusive.
The national body of the old students, OLAMIOSA, was formally inaugurated on 8th of December 2018. The body emerged from the amalgamation of motley groups of the old students which were operating along class sets and locational basis.
These small groups of class sets and state-based chapters and individuals had, at various times given assistance to the two schools, based on motivation to give back. A lot of the support given to the schools were ad hoc, staggered, and not cohesive enough to deliver strategic qualitative results.
The emergence of the OLAMIOSA national body in December 2018 introduced cohesion and corporate strength into how the challenges of both schools would be handled. This corporate strength facilitated the mobilization of other key stakeholders, particularly the Oyo State Government through the ETF, to support the rehabilitative works initiated by the old students.
OLA UK was initiated in 2016 by [(Ms. Elizabeth Ajayi, Mrs. Ann Ologbenla and Ms. Jumoke Shaba], with a Motto of "Protect and Respect", and a mission to support the development of the school. It is important to note that 3 other ladies [Ms. Omolara Joseph, Ms. Bolatito Akinmade and Ms. Olanike Onakunle] were also present at the first meeting on 15th Oct, 2016.
OLAM League of Friends was founded in 2017 by 8 ladies [Dr. Iyabode Adeyefa, Mrs. Oyindamola Apantaku, Mrs. Josephine Asunmo, Mrs. Lolade Gomes, Mrs. Christiana Nakpo-Sijuade, Mrs. Tayo Odebode, Mrs. Bose Okufi and Mrs. Iyabosola Onafujabi] with a common mission of supporting each other socially and in turn give back to the school as mentors in education of the girl child.
Both groups drew their inspiration from the passion of connecting and uniting ladies who attended Our Lady of Apostles Grammar School, Maryway, Ibadan and now residing in the United Kingdom & Ireland. They provided support the school and students, using their money to fund projects as necessary.
OLAMIOSA UK journey started with the merging of OLA UK and OLAM UK League of Friends.
OLAMIOSA UK was inaugurated in October 2019 and affiliated to OLAMIOSA National.
The inauguration ceremony included a roll call of the registered members of the chapter, followed by formal swearing-in of the Executive Members, a procedure overseen and conducted by a lawyer and presentation of inauguration certificate.
The determination to progress the association was strengthened by working together to increase membership from all parts of the UK and Ireland.
